Self-Care Toolkit
Practical, evidence-based self-care strategies designed specifically for the demands of working in education.
Daily Practices
Sustainable self-care is built on small, consistent daily habits — not grand gestures.
Morning Check-In
Take 2 minutes each morning to notice how you are feeling physically and emotionally before the day begins.
Mindful Transitions
Use the drive home or a short walk to consciously transition from work mode to personal time.
Gratitude Practice
Note three things that went well each day. Research shows this builds resilience over time.
Movement Breaks
Even 5 minutes of stretching or walking between classes reduces stress hormones.
Boundary-Setting Guide
- 1.Set a hard stop time — Choose when you will stop working each day and commit to it.
- 2.Create email boundaries — Decide when you check work email and add an auto-reply for off-hours.
- 3.Practice saying no — Use phrases like: "I appreciate you thinking of me, but I am at capacity right now."
- 4.Protect personal time — Schedule non-negotiable personal activities just like meetings.
Stress Management Techniques
Box Breathing (4-4-4-4)
Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds. Repeat 4 times. This can be done at your desk between classes.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Starting from your toes, tense each muscle group for 5 seconds, then release. Work up through your body. Takes about 10 minutes and significantly reduces physical tension.
5-4-3-2-1 Grounding
Notice 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste. This interrupts anxiety and brings you back to the present moment.
When Self-Care Is Not Enough
Self-care tools are valuable, but they have limits. If you are experiencing persistent symptoms of burnout, anxiety, or depression, professional support can make a meaningful difference. You do not need to reach a breaking point before seeking help.
