Signs of Burnout: How to Tell If You Are Burning Out

Burnout does not happen overnight. It builds gradually — day by day, week by week — until one morning you realize you have nothing left to give. The key to preventing burnout from becoming a full-blown crisis is recognizing the warning signs early.

Physical Signs

Burnout takes a measurable toll on your body:

  • Chronic fatigue — Exhaustion that does not improve with sleep or weekends off
  • Frequent illness — Weakened immune system leading to more colds and sick days
  • Sleep disruption — Insomnia, difficulty falling asleep, or waking up still tired
  • Headaches and muscle tension — Particularly in the neck, shoulders, and jaw
  • Appetite changes — Eating more or less than usual
  • Gastrointestinal issues — Stomach pain or digestive problems with no clear medical cause

Emotional Signs

  • Feeling hopeless — Believing nothing will change or improve
  • Cynicism — Growing negative about students, colleagues, or the profession
  • Emotional numbness — Feeling detached or unable to care
  • Anxiety — Sunday dread, racing thoughts about work, or panic before school
  • Irritability — Shorter patience with students, family, or yourself
  • Loss of purpose — Questioning why you became an educator

Behavioral Signs

  • Withdrawal — Avoiding colleagues, skipping social events, eating lunch alone
  • Reduced performance — Cutting corners on lesson plans, not grading as thoroughly
  • Increased absences — Taking more sick days or personal days
  • Coping mechanisms — Increased alcohol use, excessive screen time, or other numbing behaviors
  • Neglecting self-care — Stopping exercise, hobbies, or activities you used to enjoy

Burnout vs. Being Tired

Everyone has tough weeks. The difference between normal fatigue and burnout is duration and recovery. If rest restores your energy, you are experiencing normal stress. If the exhaustion persists through vacations and breaks, burnout is likely at play.

When to Seek Help

If you recognize yourself in several of the signs above, it is time to seek professional support. Burnout rarely resolves on its own — and left untreated, it can progress to anxiety, depression, and physical health problems.
